"Lead in lipstick"

This news was recently sent to me from a friend, so I don't know how accurate it is, but I just thought I would share it as it interested me.

Cassandra

Lead is a chemical which causes cancer. Recently a brand called, "Red Earth" decreased their prices dramatically. Why? It contained lead.

The Brands which contain lead are:

1. Christian Dior

2. LANCOME

3. CLINIQUE

4. Y.S.L

5. ESTEE LAUDER

6. SHISEIDO

7. RED EARTH (Lip Gloss)

8. CHANEL (Lip Conditioner)

9. Market America-Motives lipstick

The higher the lead content, the greater the chance of causing cancer. After doing a test on lipsticks, it was found that the Y.S.L.lipstick contained the most amount of lead. Watch out for those lipsticks which are supposed to stay longer. If your lipstick stays longer, it is because of the higher content of lead.

Here is the test you can do yourself:

1. Put some lipstick on your hand.

2. Use a gold ring to scratch on the lipstick.

3. If the lipstick colour changes to black then you know the lipstick contains lead.

Really? I heard that heavy metals (lead, mercury, cyanide, etc) caused so many serious health problems that they were removed from anything that people generally came in contact with. (paint, pencils, lead pipes in housing (except vent pipes and out-bound drain pipes), etc).

I also think heavy metal contamination causes very serious birth defects and can even alter your genetic senquencing (mess up your DNA), not to mention delerium, and a gaggle of other problems that basically lead to an early death.

I would be surprised if something you put on your mouth and consume when you eat, etc. would contain lead. Like cell phone radiation, if it effects the wealthy and/or beautiful, someone would have exposed the situaution and sued to get it fixed. I think you'd die of one of the other side effects of heavy metal poisoning long before cancer. The couple who invented the thermometer died from mercury poisoning and they only breathed fumes and had it on their skin. The primary researcher (the husband) died well before his assistant wife.

But, talcom powder, has issues that aren't talked about. I think it has some correlation to cancer, but it takes so long to occur (and I think it's a respritory thing) that no one really talks about it. You probably have to work in a talc mine to be concerned.

So, hell, who knows...

Tonight I expose my inner nerd or my inner idiot.

There is a really good, informative website for these kinds of issues.

In addition to the awful contents in most lipsticks, they are also unneccessarily processed using animal products.

Alternatives: I have used Kiss My Face lipstick for a long time. I think it is great and has some beautiful colors. Also the Body Shop has some nice ones.

Love,

Violet

p.s. a study was done last year that shows tuna has a level of mercury high enough to be dangerous to pregnant women. Heavy metals fall to the bottom of the ocean, then the metals are contained in any bottom dwelling fish or anything that eats the bottom dwelling fish! I am not sure if this is still true, but cosmetics often used to be made from whale oils, which might explain the lead...

I've heard Aveda is also ok for you.

But I love Mac and Versace and they are probably full of crap.
