I get sprayed on a regular basis...I have tried mystic tan with mixed results. The color is a nice golden tone but depending on how you postion your body, yo may end up with a few uneven areas. It is still worthwhile- very quick and efficient but takes some practice to get an even look. Geting airbrushed by hand gives better results but it is more expensive.

I am having a hard time finding locations. I found one in S.F. on Geary I think, but is there any other places in the Bay Area? I live in Berkeley so hoping for an Oakland or Walnut Creek or something.....

Polish in Piedmont (Oakland) offers a bronzing service that includes exfoliation, massage and application of bronzer by hand. $75. Haven't tried it, but I will let you know.

St. Tropez makes a spray on tanning solution that works better than anything I've found yet. I've gone to Mystic tan and it will sometimes streak but can work well as a supplement to doing the St. Tropez. This stuff is so awesome, I use it 2-3 x per week. It costs $30 at the Pure Beauty stores in SF and lasts about 2 months. The trick is to use a thong as a stencil so that the spray appears tanner next to your tan-line. The color is perfect - not orange!

Tips:
1. Start with a thong that doesn't let the spray come through.
2. Start with your mid-area including your butt - carefully spray and then massage it in making sure not to blur the line where your thongs are.
3. take the thongs off! (This is important because if you leave them on while you do the rest of your body, the thong line tends to move around and you're left with a blurry tan line.
4. do the rest of your body, legs, chest, arms... (the back is hard though - I usually do the best I can) all the while making sure not to spray the exposed tan-line area.
5. wash your hands immediately - sometimes I even wash them twice while I'm spraying just to make sure no dark spots appear on my wrists, etc.

I swear by this stuff because I'm very fair skinned and it gives me a glow that makes me feel so much better. Sometimes, when I'm feeling super unsexy before a session, I'll do a quick spray down and I suddenly feel sexy again! I don't use it on my face but I think Clarins makes a good face tanner.

Good luck!
all the best
bastet

p.s. there's a mystic tan in Lafayette and I think there's one in Marin as well!

clear plastic bags on your hands while spraying helps to keep the spray off of them.. also I don't do anything past the ankles either as it seems to make your feet look like they are dirty..

perhaps we could have a spray tan mixer and do each other's backs....

I am not a fan of mystic tan... I have used them several times before video shoots, but I often get these dots that wear off sooner than other parts after a couple days. If you only tan once in awhile and are just looking for a fix, this isn't really it in my opinion.

I would recommend the self tanner by Zia. You can buy it in health food stores. It turns me a very nice color… not too orange.

Yah how do you prevent the lil' dots from happening? I had the hand airbrush done ..it looked great the first day then I started getting the dots in the pores and by day 3 i was attempting to scrub it off because i was looking like I had some serious skin issues with the spots! hehe
I would love to get it done again if there was a sure way to prevent it.

Madi.

Dead skin causes streaking. You have to exfoliate the hell out of your skin. That means taking a towel or whatever you use to exfoliate and scrub your skin before you go to the mystic tan place.

I have read extensive consumer beauty books and from all I had read, all tanning lotions have the exact same ingrediant. So the girl that got the fabulous tan I don't know why that would be better then any other one.

If you look on the ingrediants of self tanning creams, they all have the exact same ingrediant in the same amount...

I always miss a spot when I self tan, so I am liking the Mystic Tan better and better.

There is a place in S.F. on Sutter or Post called On Shimmer. Its like a Mystic Tan but better I think. Why? They spray you 4 times instead of 2.

Sole di Paradiso in Palo Alto is a great place to go! I've purchased discount cards since I'm finding that I need to re-spray more often than before.

It also helps if you do outdoor activities (in moderation) of course. Enjoy the sun while we have it!

Even though I am really light skinned I have to use the darkest spray level. And don't forget to use that barrier cream (or plastic bags like Eve said).

I use the California Tan product on my clients and use it myself. The key to avoiding dirty looking feet is using a barrier cream on your feet, and hands actually. It will still let some of the product in but wont let it get to the dryer skin in those areas as much.
The dots come with a few things. One, if you have large pores and the other is if you are exceptionally dry and have not exfoliated properly. Use a salt scrub, WITHOUT oil in it, the day before you spray, and use a manual scrub such as a loofa on the morning of your tan. Also, to keep your tan for as long as possible, moisturize the hell out of your skin. Normaly we want to scrub off the dead cells but in this case they are what is holding the color so we want to moisturize and keep them on for as long as possible.

DO NOT USE A TANNING BED! People who tan that way risk skin cancer as well as look old before their time!

Whatever you are, be a good one.

I've done the mystic tan machine. I personally think it works better than when you have someone spray you. But, maybe that's because the few times I had someone spray me they weren't very skilled. (I have only tried 2 people). Also, the mystic tan's color suits me better. When I get sprayed I look ridiculous until a couple of days of wear. I'm fair skinned.

Does anyone have any secrets on scrubbing the tan off? I can't reach my back! I've just been going to get re-sprayed with the old tan still sort of on.
