"Mirena IUD"

My OB/GYN informs me that the Mirena IUD emits a small amount of progesterone, telling the uterus it is pregnant so stop all that baby making action, LOL. It is not enough progesterone to get into your blood stream. But it reduces menstrual flow in some women!!(Now you're talkin') You can have it in for 5 years.

I am interested in this, because I do not want synthetic hormones coursing through my veins. If I am going to get hormones, I want natural ones to prevent menopause.

IUD's have come a long way since they were first invented. FYI.

Hi ladies,

Ive had my Mirena IUD for almost 2 years & the first year is most definitely the hardest. I had irregular bleeding for the first 6-10 months. it really sucks never knowing when youre gonna flow...or not bleeding for 2 months in a row...very erratic. These days, my period is always on time. The Mirena has made my periods very light(usually 2 tablespoons of blood the first 2 days & then VERY light spotting for the next 3-4 days after)I always also have "old blood" up to 1 week after my period has ended! panty liners are my best friend! I do enjoy not having to buy tampons & huge pads...lol. My biggest complaint with the Mirena is that if you are having sex with a larger guy(thicker OR longer)you may feel some discomfort. I had to have my strings snipped after a few months of having it & it greatly improved my discomfort.

Also, if you have a history of cysts in your family or health, please make sure to do your research and get second opinions!! Doctors these days are almost like salesmen & want their "commission" Do not feel pressured into an IUD from anyone, as it is a long-term commitment of a foreign object inside your body. The Mirena is not for everyone.

My next door neighbor just told me her nightmare experience with the Mirena IUD. She ended up with a perforated uterus that let to a major pelvic infection. She had to be hospitalized. She is thankfully ok. I'm glad my bf has a vasectomy! (and I don't think I can get pregnant anyway. I tried for 8 years with my ex and he has a new wife and a 2 year old. So the fertility problem is mine)

I have had the Mirena IUD in since November 2007, only one year left on my 5 year stint. I haven't had a period the ENTIRE time, which is great for constant sex.

I did try all the other forms of B/C, and have never had a kid, so this was my last option at the time.

I have heard it might be hard to get pregnant after it, but we'll see when that time comes.
