"STD Resources & Clinics"

LAST EDITED ON 08-Jan-09 AT 04:23 PM (PST) by (moderator)

FYI, most clinics these days can test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea by taking a urine sample, instead of the uncomfortable and time-consuming pelvic swab. HIV can be tested by a mouth swab or drawing blood. Syphilis still requires a blood test, as does Hepatitis A, B & C.

There are vaccines available for Hepatitis A & B, and its a good idea for anyone exchanging ANY bodily fluid (including saliva) with persons whose health history is unknown to get those vaccines. Most public clinics offer them, but call to check for specific cost and info.

Please be aware many STDs these days are almost symptomless in men. Do yourself and your clients a favour by getting tested on a regular basis.

Below is a list of low/no-cost health clinics in the Bay Area:

The St James Infirmary...
is a provider-run organisation offering free, confidential, nonjudgmental medical and social services for female, transgendered, and male sex workers. Don't forget to pick up their excellent Occupational Health and Safety Handbook!

The San Francisco City Clinic...
offers STD and HIV testing and counselling, along with family planning services. The site also lists resources for STD questions, risks and research updates.

Planned Parenthood...
offers reproductive health care to men, women and teens, including STD testing and birth control. Clinics are located in San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, East Bay and the Peninsula.

The incredibly-knowledgeable and ever lovely gds_Juliette was kind enough to send me these internet resources of hepatitis info:

The site below is recommended by San Francisco Sex Info:
http://www.engenderhealth.org/wh/inf/index.html

This one has some good info on HIV/AIDS - and some really good precise info on risk levels:
